Japanese budget airline launches cargo flights

The newly established Japanese low-cost airline, Zipair Tokyo Corporation, launched cargo flights between Narita Airport, east of the capital of Japan, and Bangkok on Wednesday, June 3.

The discount airline, which is a subsidiary of Japanese Airlines, initially intended to launch passenger flights on this route in mid-May, but was forced to postpone their start due to the global COVID-19 pandemic.

Instead, the company allocated its Boeing 787-8 passenger aircraft to transport cargo in its cargo compartment, in order to meet the lack of aircraft capacity, despite the high demand on this air route. The shortage is explained by the cancellation of some flights between Japan and Thailand due to the pandemic of a new coronavirus infection.

At first, Zipair will operate 4 flights a week on the Narita—Bangkok route, later the air carrier will consider the timing of the transfer of cargo flights to passenger flights, as soon as the governments of Japan and Thailand ease restrictions on entry into their countries and there will be demand for air travel.

On Wednesday, June 3, the budget air carrier carried out the first flight from Narita International Airport, which transported about 13 tons of basic necessities, including detergents.

"This is our first step in the business of performing commercial flights. Since Thailand is a trading partner of Japan, with which it maintains close relations, the first flight on this route gives us a sense of satisfaction," said Shingo Nishida, president of the Japanese airline Zipair, before the launch of cargo flights.

In addition to automotive components and electronic devices, the airline expects an increase in demand for air deliveries of clothing, as well as perishable goods, especially on return flights from Bangkok to Narita.

The Japanese air carrier Zipair can carry cargo per flight more than other Japanese low-cost carriers, since the airline, which, in the future, plans to fly on North American and European routes, uses rather large aircraft.

Zipair Airlines, headquartered at Narita Airport (Chiba Prefecture), was founded in July 2018 as a subsidiary of Japanese Airlines with an authorized capital of 9 billion yen. Its air fleet is represented by two 290-seat Boeing 787-8 airliners. In addition to the Narita—Bangkok route, the airline plans to operate flights between Narita and Incheon airports (South Korea).
